Why gutters fail here
Heavy tree cover in older Jackson neighborhoods drops leaves and seed pods into gutters from spring through late fall, and shingle granules wash into them after every hard rain. Once a run holds standing water instead of draining, the hangers pull loose, the seams start leaking, and the fascia board behind the gutter begins to soften.
A downpour that a healthy gutter system handles without issue becomes a wall of water running down the siding once the system is clogged or pitched wrong.
Repair, re-pitch, or replace
Gutters holding standing water usually just need re-hanging with a proper fall toward the downspout, which is often cheaper than it sounds. Leaking seams and end caps get cleaned and re-sealed. Sections crushed by a fallen limb or a ladder get cut out and replaced without touching the rest of the run.
When the fascia behind a gutter has rotted from years of overflow, that gets replaced before the new gutter goes back up, because new hangers need something solid to bite into.
Gutters and the roof edge
A clogged gutter backs water up under the bottom course of shingles and against the drip edge, and over a few seasons that soaks the decking at the eave. The first sign is usually a soft spot felt underfoot near the edge of the roof, long before it shows up as a leak inside. Gutter work is often the cheapest thing we recommend after a roof inspection, and it heads off a much larger repair down the line.
Gutter guards, honestly assessed
Guards cut down on cleaning but they do not end it. Fine-mesh guards handle pine needles and shingle grit reasonably well. Solid reverse-curve guards shed leaves but can overshoot in the hard, fast downpours a Mississippi thunderstorm delivers, sending water past the gutter entirely instead of into it. We fit guards where the roof and tree cover make sense for them and say plainly when they will not help, which is usually under heavy canopy on a low-pitch roof.
A gutter cleaning done alongside a roof inspection catches problems on both systems at once, since a soft fascia board or a lifted drip edge is often visible from the same ladder position.
